History and Overview of Gender-Based Pay
History
Throughout the 1900’s women started to acquire jobs, especially when the war was ongoing. Men were away from their home land fighting off the enemy while women were stuck at home with nothing to do but take care of the house. They soon started to take the jobs that were unoccupied since the men were away at war.
Women worked all sorts of jobs that were available and were the same exact ones that men had done, but still managed to get paid less for their time and efforts. “Women with full time jobs earned on average between 59–64 cents for every dollar their male counterparts earned in the same job” (Rowen par. 3). This article that talks about the history of unequal pay states that women earned around 41-36 cents less than men did. Even though the government had passed laws stating it was illegal to pay women less for the same jobs that men did based on their gender, it still ensued.
